A Chinese buddhist monk prays in the Yonghegong Temple in Beijing on Monday 21 March 2011. These monks are appointed by the Chinese government and are required to maintain loyalty the government-appointed Dalai Lama. Since buddhism – and any form of religion – was banned during the cultural revolution and for many years afterwards, many Chinese question the qualifications and sincerity of these monks. The Yonghegong Temple is the largest and best-preserved lamasery in Beijing, having miraculously survived the destruction of historic and religious sites during the Cultural Revolution.
