It’s Spring Festival, or Chinese New Year. Fireworks shops are open on many corners, and the sound of fireworks can be heard from about six in the morning; as night falls the noise increases, and towards midnight it builds into a deafening crescendo. This happens again on the 15th day of the new year. I went into the Hutong where I live and shot for several hours, dodging exploding ordinance at every step.
